What is Haverhill Youth Theatre?

Haverhill Youth Theatre is an exciting new theatrical group for young people aged 5 to 18 years. There will be classes every Sunday during school term times where young people can sing, dance, act, learn and perform in a fully operational, professional theatre with qualified and experienced teachers. There will be plenty of opportunities to enjoy performing musical theatre songs and shows on the historic Haverhill Arts Centre stage.

Where is Haverhill Youth Theatre based?

We are based in Haverhill Arts Centre . You can find us at: Haverhill Arts Centre, High Street, Haverhill, Suffolk, CB9 8AR.

We have a car park at the back of the arts centre. As you come into town, look for the street signs to Arts Centre Long Stay Car Park which is right behind us on Helions Walk. The postcode for the car park is: CB9 8DN.

What ages are the groups split into?

We have two age groups:
STAGE 1 is for JUNIORS = School year 1 to 6
STAGE 2 SENIORS = School year 6 to 13

What do I need to know about the HYT Workshops?

Our workshops are fun two-day events which end with a performance. They are a bit different from our regular classes, so here’s what you need to know:

What should my child bring?

  • A packed lunch
    Water (this will also be provided)
    Snacks
    Any essential medication (please make sure this is declared on your booking form)

Will I get to watch the performance?

  • Yes! At the end of the second day, parents and carers are invited to watch a special performance showcasing everything the children have learned during the workshop.

Who will be running the classes?

Each class will be taught by qualified and experienced teachers who will cover everything from singing lessons to acting masterclasses.

What if I miss the first class?

Don’t worry – you can still join the group! Contact the Haverhill Arts Centre box office to pay the pro rata rate – 01440 714140.

Will there be performances parents can watch?

Yes! There will be two performances a year – a Christmas and a Summer public showcase – on stage at Haverhill Arts Centre where you can see everything the children have learned.

There will also be the chance to watch your children perform at our workshop sessions.

Is there a uniform / dress code?

There is no uniform, but appropriate soft shoes and clothes that can be easy to move in are required. 

HYT T-shirts will be available to buy in the near future.

When are the classes?

Classes will run in blocks of three terms and will coincide with school terms. You can see the latest dates on our homepage .

What time do the classes run?

Stage 1 classes (Juniors – School year 1 to 6): 9:30am – 10:15am
Stage 2 classes (Seniors – School year 6 to 13): 10:15am – 11:15am

How much is it to join?

Stage 1 – £45 per term
Stage 2 – £60 per term

What if I can’t afford the fees?

We are also offering bursaries for families who need extra support. Please contact us to find out more.

What if I pay for a whole term but my child doesn’t like it after the first session?

The first session is considered a taster – so if your child doesn’t like it then they can leave the youth theatre and get a full refund. However refunds are not available thereafter.

Do I have to attend all the sessions – if my child is ill or can’t attend a session can I get refund?

You do not have to attend every session, but no refunds are given for sessions you do not attend regardless of the reason.

Do I need to pack food and drink?

We recommend a snack and a drink, but water will be available. Alternative food and drink will also be available to purchase in the Haverhill Arts Centre cafe.

Does my child need theatre experience?

Not at all! Our classes and workshops welcome children of all abilities, whether they are stepping onto the stage for the first time, or already have a love of performing.

Does my child need to be independent?

Yes. Children attending the classes or workshops should be able to use the toilet independently.

If your child has any additional needs, or if there is anything you feel we should know to help support them, please let us know.

Can I stay with my child?

Parents are not allowed to stay and watch the classes – however parents are welcome to wait in the Haverhill Arts Centre cafe.

This also applies for our HYT Workshops, except for the performance on the second day.

My child has special needs, can they join?

Yes! We do our best to accommodate all young people. To find out more, please fill out the contact form with as much detail as possible so that we can answer any specific questions.

Booking form & medical information

It is essential that all medical information, allergies, dietary requirements, emergency contacts and photo permissions are completed on your booking form before attending.

The form is sent via the confirmation email after booking your child’s place.

If your child’s information changes after booking, please let us know as soon as possible.
